Dan Austen: Top 5 tracks right now

In this day and age where we need everything fast and right now, the escape from the hard fast pace of life ends up reflecting the very life we lead. A hard week at work means a weekend escape as the best alternative to a vacation. Our local bars and clubs offer that temporary escape from life’s every day and the role of the DJ directs that journey, bringing everyone together and making them forget – if only briefly – the boring every day. In Australia, international DJs have a reputation of being the entertainment director on this Love Boat we’ve chartered, and our local DJs are often forgotten in the excitement of “the big name”. But local DJs are the ones who educate us and uncover the freshest, newest sounds and tracks. Local DJs are the heart blood of local EDM, driving our nightlife and dance community. And when feature nights for our local DJs pop up, these are the perfect opportunities to delve into what really makes them tick and see them unleash.

And this Saturday night with Dan Austen will be that perfect moment to capture his musical essence. Since his days playing to win at the GPO’s Discover DJ Competition and then cutting his teeth playing at Electric Playground in DJ twosome Private Duo, Dan has since ventured out solo with a spate of gigs around town and sets at Future Music Festival. Support gigs with Will Sparks, Prok & Fitch, Eddie Thoenick and R3hab are a mere indication of the varied musical command he has at his fingertips, allowing him to emerge as a house music powerhouse, diluting anthemic dancefloor bombs amid deep underground tracks with all the finesse of a physician.

In the lead up to his feature night when GPO Republic pres. Dan Austen at GPO Hotel this Saturday, we prepare for a journey that takes us from the daily grind of the every day into the land of the hard and the heavy: Dan Austen grabs his headphones and picks out his Top 5 Tracks right now.
