Canapes a-plenty, bubbles all-round and a dazzling display of cutting edge fashion – Melbourne Cup. The race that stops the nation. But what Queensland lacks in live races, we make up for in celebration. It’s time for suit up and find the finest fascinator. Spring has sprung and race fever is in the air. And MyCityLife are on track for celebrations of all descriptions across Brisbane to see you back the winner.
MELBOURNE CUP TOP SHELF
If French champagne is the preference as a filly or fellow that enjoys the finer aspects in life, then the Mercedes-Benz Melbourne Cup Gala at City Hall is the pick. Chic and glamorous, this is the event that has everything from an Alex Perry collection showcase to Paspaley Pearls. e’cco Bistro will giddy up, with more than $7,000 worth of prizes to be won alongside a specially curated Philip Johnson menu. Sophisticated A-listers will certainly enjoy the Melbourne Cup Spring Garden Party at The Emporium Hotel, where Liz Cantor (rather appropriate last name for racing) hosts the day with a Carla Zampatti fashion showcase. And from Portside in Hamilton, the Byblos 7th Annual Mad Hatter’s Melbourne Cup Tea Party will return with the usual Melbourne Cup madness of wackiness, rides and general garden party frivolity.
It can be hard to pinpoint whether it’s the latest fashion the joy of drinking bubbles before midday or the adrenaline and atmosphere of the big race itself. Race day isn’t complete without all three, and the Brisbane Racing Club at Doomben with VIP Spring Soiree Marquee hosted by Capulet and Montague is where throwing down bets needs to happen this Melbourne Cup day.
Doomben brings the thrill of the race to life, but Story Bridge Hotel creates an atmosphere to rival the main event. A perfect mix of glamour and sporting thrills guarantees an unforgettable Melbourne Cup experience.
FOR THE FOODIES
Delicious canapes and courses will be served up all across The City on this race day, but to indulge in some of the finest culinary delights this city has to offer, there’s plenty of space at these starting gates. Inner City, The Euro and Urbane are offering premium three course meals.

CAUSE YOU CAN
There’s nothing quite like giving to others. If Melbourne Cup festivities can contribute to something other than a mid-week hangover, then spending race day to help out a worthy charity makes it all the better. Supporting Chicks In Pink to help raise funds for breast cancer, Pink + Black at Watt Restaurant & Bar in New Farm is the place to get your pink and black on. The Loft West End has proceeds from all raffles on race day to be donated to the Cerebral Palsy League. The Popolo Italian Bar and Kitchen and Libertine Bar and Restaurant sees 50% of sweeps proceeds donated to Mater Little Miracles. Soleil Pool Bar at Bacchus are raising funds for Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia while Byblos and Blackbird Bar & Grill are holding charity sweepstakes for Youngcare.
No bother? No fuss? Our favourite local bars and hang outs are screening the race but operating as usual, saving the fuss of booking packages while still leaving all the excitement. Kick it old school and sip on an old-fashioned at The Gresham while listening to the race over the wireless. Or enjoy lunch specials and sparkling ale on tap at Archive Beer Boutique in West End. For the coffee lovers out there, grab a racy ristretto or a long-legged latte and cheer on the winner from either Merlo in Bowen Hills or Paddington.
