Calling all Queensland musicians and filmmakers! If you’re a budding artist who’s looking for a leg up in the industry, then it’s time to enter the Queensland Music Awards 2018.
Looking for that little extra inspiration and motivation to enter? Don’t worry, we’ll be your proud mothers and lay down all the reasons why we think you should enter! Let’s start off with the big one – INTERNATIONAL FAME! Have you been jamming along to Amy Shark’s music all year? We know we certainly have! After winning the Pop Award in 2016 for her track 'Golden Fleece', Amy’s international career took off, where she then also won the QMA’s 2017 Song of the Year (SOTY) for ‘Adore’.
LOCAL FAME! If you’re the lucky winner of the QMA Song of the Year, you’ll find your song immortalised in a plaque on Fortitude Valleys’ Walk of Fame in Brunswick Street Mall, alongside a mélange of superstars and indie legends from Powderfinger, Keith Urban, Savage Garden and our very own Violent Soho.
There’s also a promotional prize pack worth $20,000 courtesy of The Music & NOVA 106.9 for the winners of the 2018 SOTY as well. From profiling on the Queensland Music Awards website and playlists, to national media release inclusions and interview opportunities, you’ll be finding your stride in the music industry in no time.
The QMAs span a wide range of genres with 13 categories available to enter including Pop, Rock, Blues/Roots, Country, Hip-Hop/Rap, Singer Songwriter, World/Folk, Jazz, Electronic/Dance, Heavy, Regional and Video and Schools (Grade 6-12). Entering is simple: just head to the submissions page on the QMA website, fill in the form, upload your chosen song and voilà - you’re done. Feel free to enter a song into multiple categories too (just know there’s an entry fee for each category).
One important factor you’ll need to take into consideration is: ARE YOU A QUEENSLANDER!? Only artists residing in Queensland are eligible to enter. In the case of songwriting teams/bands, as long as 50% of the team is based in Queensland, you’ll be good to go.
The ceremony will also recognise a more diverse group of contributors to Queensland music, including Live Music Festival of the Year and Live Music Venue of the Year (Metro & Regional) as part of the annual QMA People’s Choice Awards. You can get ready to cast your vote when it opens to the public in April 2018.
QMusic has also revealed its biggest and most diverse judging pool ever. Just by entering the QMAs, Queensland musicians will have their music heard by prominent media, labels, A&R, managers, booking agents, publishers and sync agents. Some of the judges on board for 2018 include Marc Sousley (Sydney City Limits), Petrina Convey (Sony Music Australia), Amy Jarman (BMG Music Australia), Ben Godding (Kobalt Music), Jane Slingo (EMC), Jack Bridges (Beatport) but you can find the full list here.
Submissions for the Queensland Music Awards will be accepted until January 21, 2018 via www.queenslandmusicawards.com.au
