Since then, The Brisbane sites of Beach Burrito Company have unfortunately closed down. The Coolangatta site is still up and running, but is temporarily closed due to the COVID lockdown. Once we hear that they are reopening, Embrace Brisbane will bring you the latest updates
The Valley continues its love affair with Mexican street food, given you throw a rock and you hit a taco. In the one kilometre vicinity of Queensland’s #1 Entertainment precinct, you have Tuckeria Fresh, Guzman y Gomez, Mad Mex, Montezuma, The Hotel Orient and Chilliwow. By all means, each guacamole joint retains their own unique characters with their own special menus, delivery of Coronas, love for gaily hue-d skulls and affection for the blend of earthy tones with splashes of bright colours in decor. Clearly the Mexican craze is de rigeur for Brisbane. Which explains the timely addition of Beach Burrito Company on Brunswick Street to The City’s corn chip cart(e).
Expanding south from Sydney, Blake Read has ridden the Mexican wave north, bringing The BBCo’s idiosyncratic personality with him. The one thing that makes The Beach Burrito Co. stand out is the way the Mexican restaurant chain assimilates into its location. Bondi and Cronulla, superbly incorporate the beach vibe while Jindabyne embraces the lakeside aura. And so it is for Brisbane too: our eternal Queensland sunshine means The BBC has a sundrenched courtyard to suit our alfresco lifestyle; the perfect accompaniment to their jalapeno poppers. Add The BBC’s charismatic affection for the countercultures of surfing, graff and skating, and we have a Mexican restaurant that really is like no other.
Each day has its own designated special celebration, from #Sangria Sundays to #Taco Tuesdays as well as features on local artists, like Saturday nights with awesomely insane DJs like Charlie Hustle or phresh live paintings from creative creatures such as Cherie Buttonss.
The vibe even from the entrance is immediately dazzling, yet casual. You can dress up your taco as much as you like, be it serendipitous or elegant: everyone is welcome to The BBCo party. Dates, hangouts, celebrations and festivities or grabbing a bite on the go are all #ideal.
And while the burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadillas, fajitas, enchiladas and salads are popping with freshness, colour, flavor and juice, the slight twists are what keeps The BBCo interesting.
The Burrito Bowls, flash fried burrito sensation chimichanga, taquitos, chilli fries, vegy nachos, chipotle mayonnaise, blanco salsa and overtures of both vegetables and garden (for those boringly healthy vegan/ vego types) keeps the menu #delightful.
Tacos with fillings of tempura fish, lime chilli garlic prawn (not recommended on first dates) and tofu with slow roasted vegetables are the most impressive; the crispy tortillas explode with #sapidity.
Add Jose Cuervo frozen margaritas, sangrias, an Elefante sav blanc, xo cafe patron and/or buckets of Sol, and one could have themselves quite the Cinco de Mayo.
Throw in the finale of chocolate churros, and one might just need a #siesta on the wooden benches.
There are sure to be more cantinas and fiestas when Beach Burrito Company does the Mexican run around to West End. While West End is the Sunshine State’s illegal doodling hub and thus perfectly attuned to The BBCo’s dynamism, we are indeed holding back the frijole burpees in anticipation to see how The BBCo digests this village’s bohemian turf. One thing is for sure though: Bring out the mariachi band. Beach Burrito Company is definitely #estupendo.
