The Brisbane Jazz International Festival is always one of of the coolest festivals on the calendar. In its second year, it’s already a “must not miss” experience. From June 4 – 8, expect days of incredibly high quality live music from the best musicians in town and from around the world.
The big success of BJIF’s edition last year was a strong indicator that Queensland audiences are hungry for good music. With concert events, public stages, CD launches, Australian and International artist collaborations, free entry events, workshops, jam sessions, expect five days of amazing live improvisational and jazz music to echo throughout The City.

|Queensland Week Jazz Composers World Premier|
The opening concert of Brisbane International Jazz Festival features award winning Queensland jazz composers Rafael Karlen, Andrew Butt, Louise Denson and Sean Foran. Receive a glimpse of modern Europe jazz with UK guest Julian Argüelles, one of Europe’s most inventive saxophonists. The jazz trio Trichotomy explores and creates their exciting new work.

|The Bowery Hot Five with Mal Wood + Jam Session|
The Bowery, 9.30pm Wednesday June 4
What’s better than good music? Great cocktails too! At The Bowery, Mal Wood gathers the best players in town together with some of the world greatest entertainers, from Jerry Lewis, John and James Morrison, David Campbell, Grace Knight, Rhonda Burchmore, Stan Walker, Bobby Flynn and many other great names.

Jazz Music Institute, 5pm, Friday June 6
This Sydney band has performed all across Australia winning the best Australian Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year for 2003 at the Australian Jazz Awards. This is definitely one big small band to pop onto the Brisbane International Jazz Festival bucket list.

|Julien Wilson Quartet + Barney McAll Solo Piano|
Queensland Multicultural Centre, 7.30pm Friday June 6
Hearts will be touched and souls energised by Barney McCall’s solo performance. This premium American artist and winner of the 1990 National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz will impress with his grace and finesse. The Julien Wilson Quartet also unites with American Barney McAll, bassist Jonathan Zwartz and drummer, Allan Browne for a completely rare and unique sound.

|Joshua Redman Quartet|
Queensland Multicultural Centre 7pm Saturday June 7
This is a concert not to be missed as double Grammy-nominated saxophonist Joshua Redman unites with the phenomenal finesse of pianist Aaron Goldberg, energetic articulation of bassist Reuben Rogers and the incredible skills of drummer Gregory Hutchinson.
