Newstead’s favourite neighbourhood laneway kitchen Allonda has a new special that’s sure to get Brisbane foodies talking. After their steak frites went viral on Instagram, Allonda decided to add on a glass of wine and make it a special every single Thursday night!

There are three cuts of steak on the menu—depending on your appetite and whether you want to share a little or a lot—and each comes with your choice of either a pinot noir, cabernet, sauvignon shiraz, chenin blanc, chardonnay or rosé.

Allonda interior
Allonda is known for its cosy interior.

For $49, you can delight in a 250g 2GR+ Wagyu Rostbiff, or there’s the $59 Riverine 300g porterhouse—both served with frites and Allonda’s special jus. Or, if you wanna share between three, there’s the Riverine T-Bone, coming in at a whopping 1kg, and served with the frites, jus and a table salad to share—that one is $145. And again, all these amazing, mouthwatering cuts of meat are served with a glass of wine each.

Our Allonda experience

I’d never been to Allonda before but had heard friends rave about it so I was eager to finally get to try a morsel off the menu. We had intended on just trying the steak frites special, but there were other things tempting us on the menu so we decided we needed to do entree, main and dessert. “Oh no,” she said,  sarcastically.

I almost always go for a burrata if it’s on the menu, and Allonda is famed for its use of strawberries alongside the traditional balsamic and tomatoes that accompany. The Casa Motto burrata is smooth, and creamy—perfectly offset by the acidity of the accompaniments. The strawberries really are a delightful sweet side and pair perfectly with the cheese.

Next up we choose a pork belly because… well, pork belly. Here, it’s served with cabbage, apple, sesame and namh jim. The manager suggests a particular rosé will go super well with the pork, and who are we to say no? He is indeed correct—the saltiness of the pork goes SO well with the rosé that it could get me into trouble.

For the steak frites special we opt for the 300g Riverine porterhouse, with glasses of pinot noir and shiraz. We also go for a table salad because it just feels right.

Just look at that buttery steak and glossy jus!

The steak is a perfect size to share between two, and is covered in the glossiest looking jus I think I’ve seen. Fries are crisp on the outside and super fluffy inside. The steak is buttery and melts in your mouth, and—well, let’s just say, name a more iconic duo than steak and Allonda jus.

And we could have stopped there, but I had to try the chocolate brulee because… well, chocolate BRULEE. My foodie buddie enjoys a creamy tiramisu and coffee while I tuck into my brulee. The top has a satisfying crack of the sugar and the bottom is a very dense, chocolatey treat. The theme of the night seems to be flavours that marry well, and the dessert is no exception—raspberry sorbet and coconut add a delightfully light touch to a dense chocolate offering.

Anyone for dessert?

Allonda has seemingly always been a much-talked-about destination in the foodie community, and their Thursday night steak frites and vino special is certainly another feather in their cap. When I leave, I am already making a mental note to bring my friend back here and try some of the pasta or risotto on the menu.
