What is Moana 2 about?
Moana returns as a leader of her people now who is struggling with understanding why she hasn’t encountered other people during her exploration to other islands. In a vision, Moana is visited by one of Motunui’s original wayfinders, Tautai Vasa, who tells her about the island Motufetū that was lost long ago. Moana has to recruit a team this time, and take on Nalo, the god of storms, to find a long-lost island that connects the people of the ocean.
Moana 2 has assembled a team of cultural experts in anthropology, history, dance and movement, canoes and navigation, linguistics, and various cultural practices from the Pacific Islands to ensure that the story celebrates and resonates with the communities and the cultures that inspired them. This included Kalikolehua Hurley, the senior cultural manager. The story itself is rooted in the real-world belief systems of Pacific Islanders, says Hurley. “We are taught from a young age that it’s all about community. We believe that as a village, we are stronger and can get more done when we’re working together. So, for Moana to go on an even bigger adventure this time, she had to go with more people—she recruits a crew and must lead them. Seeing Moana make more connections also ties into the belief that the ocean doesn’t separate us, the ocean connects us.”
Who Stars in Moana 2?
The original voice cast makes a welcome return. Auli’i Cravalho reprises her role as Moana, capturing the character’s growth and leadership with nuance and authenticity. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back as Maui, bringing his blend of confidence, humor, and charm to the role..
New characters are also added to the mix, and bringing in the cute-factor is Moana’s little sister Simea played by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda.
Is Moana 2 OK for Kids to Watch?
Parents wondering if Moana 2 is a good choice for their kids can rest assured—it still is family-friendly like the original. However the film includes plenty of action and suspense, and can get very intense and frightening at parts. Kids at the theatre were coming out smiling though, so likely shouldn’t be too traumatic.
The Animation
Disney outdid itself with the visuals in Moana 2. The animation is so stunning, you’ll feel like you’ve booked a one-way ticket to the Pacific Islands. The water effects are more lifelike than ever, and the lush, tropical landscapes practically shimmer on screen.
Music: Another Hit?
Sadly, Lin-Manuel Miranda didn’t return to sprinkle his musical magic and it shows. But overall, the songs are fabulous, although I am not sure if there are any catchy ear-worms like the first film. The music does grow on you over time though, and there are some great relatable lyrics.
Does Moana 2 Measure Up to the Original?
The sequel doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first Moana, but it’s still an entertaining ride. The original had the advantage of being fresh and groundbreaking, while Moana 2 treads familiar waters. That said, it’s still great to be able to revisit the familiar world of Moana with some new songs and a new story.
It’s clear the filmmakers poured their hearts into honouring the cultural roots of the story and the Pasifika people, which gives the film an authenticity that sets it apart from many generic Disney flicks.
