Ahhh the festive season is over and it’s the time of the year when our skin tends to punish us for all the fun we had. Think clogged pores, pimples and probably skin that’s been hydrate much less than it should have been. No more picking or popping needed to nix these nasties though: pimple patches are here to save you from yourself.

We spoke to tbh Skincare Co-Founder Rachael Wilde about these little skin lifesavers and their benefits for your skincare regimen.

What are the benefits of pimple patches?

“Pimples patches evolved from hydrocolloid bandages which have been used in the medical industry for decades, generally to draw out fluid from a wound while allowing the skin underneath to stay hydrated,” Rachael says.

“These hydrocolloid patches are amazing for speeding up the healing process of breakouts. Whilst they won’t necessarily be able to help with more cystic cases of acne (due to the fact that this type of acne is embedded deep below the surface of the skin), they are amazing at getting rid of blemishes that sit right on top of the skin (more colloquially referred to as whiteheads) as they draw out any excess fluid and bacteria.

“The pimple patches not only absorb the gunk from your skin, but they also prevent your blemishes from external irritants such as your hands! That’s right, they stop you from picking at your pimples.

“Some patches, like tbh Skincare’s everyday patches, are also formulated with breakout fighting ingredients such as ascorbic acid, tea tree oil, niacinamide and salicylic acid. These additional ingredients help to correct post breakout pigmentation, reduce redness and congestion as well as soothe the skin.”

How do pimple patches work?

“Hydrocolloid patches are made from a moisture-absorbing material that’s been used for decades in the medical community to help with wound healing,” she says. “The material gently absorbs excess fluids, like pus and oil, from your pimple while also protecting the wound. By allowing a pimple to heal in a somewhat sterile environment, which is key for preventing scarring and speeding up healing time, you are left with a flatter, less inflamed pimple by the time you take it off!”

How do you use pimple patches?

Rachael says pimple patches should be the very last step in your routine, “after cleansing, moisturising and any other steps you wish to include. Give your skin a chance to soak up the goodness of your products, then apply the patch over top. This allows your skin to benefit from your other products and helps the patch stick for the desired amount of time.

In regards to when you should apply the patches, we recommend putting on your pimple patches just before you go to bed and keeping them on overnight. The recommended amount of time to leave pimple patches on for is a minimum of six hours.

You can, however, wear them any time you feel like it! We especially recommend putting them on when you catch yourself picking at your skin.
