For the first time in Queensland, the Tony Award winning Billy Elliot the Musical has opened at the Star Casino Gold Coast. Based on the hit movie Billy Elliot, the musical adaptation combines dance, drama, and comedy to create an entertaining emotional rollercoaster. Billy Elliot the Musical is a story about dreams, determination, and the sheer joy of letting loose on the dance floor.

Billy Elliot starts off as a young boy, in the midst of the 1984 miners’ strike, who accidentally stays behind after his boxing class and finds himself in the midst of a ballet class where he discovers his passion for dance.

The Billy Elliot set transports you straight to the gritty streets of County Durham, from the drab houses to the coal mines. At the heart of the show is the wonderful cast. As expected, Billy Elliot steals the show with his enthusiastic dance moves, but all of the cast are bringing their A-game.

While the cast may be predominantly children, this show contains frequent swearing and some contextual homophobic slurs. Whether it is suitable for children to attend is debatable, they will have a great time, but you may have some explaining to do afterwards!

Elton John’s iconic melodies come to life on stage, filling the theatre with an infectious energy that’s impossible to resist. While the songs may not be particularly groundbreaking – there are some heart-wrenching ballads and catchy tunes here to enjoy.

But what truly sets Billy Elliot the Musical apart is its ability to tug at your heartstrings. Amidst the laughter and foot-stomping extravaganza, there’s an underlying message about acceptance, perseverance, and following your dreams. It’s a tale of defying societal expectations and embracing your passions, no matter the odds.

So grab your dancing shoes, head on over to the Star, and prepare to be thoroughly entertained.
