If your idea of a gym still involves fluorescent lighting, rows of treadmills and a lingering scent of yesterday’s workout, it might be time for a reset. West End’s newest wellness destination has officially opened its doors, and it feels less like a gym and more like the kind of place you’d happily spend an entire day.

Function Well has unveiled its $15 million flagship hub inside West Village, bringing four levels of fitness, recovery and lifestyle experiences together in one seriously impressive space. And if you’ve been meaning to check it out, consider this your sign.

Our very own content creator Ellen Axford recently paid a visit and quickly realised this wasn’t a place where you squeeze in a workout between appointments. In fact, she admitted she could have easily spent the entire day there.

The mood lighting, the soft curtains… this is reformer pilates done right.

The fit-out is stunning, with beautifully designed spaces that feel closer to a luxury wellness retreat than a traditional fitness centre. Every floor reveals another thoughtfully designed corner, and the attention to detail extends well beyond the workout spaces themselves. Even the bathrooms have been designed to create a sense of calm, with a look and feel that makes you want to slow down rather than rush through your routine.

Of course, the fitness offering is substantial. The 24/7 gym floor is packed with equipment, while five dedicated studios host everything from functional training and yoga to reformer Pilates. Function Well is also an official HYROX Training Club, making it a major drawcard for anyone keen to get involved in the global fitness phenomenon that’s rapidly building a following across Brisbane.

The class spaces feel modern and VERY aesthetic.

For Ellen, the standout was the Pilates studio. Framed by soft flowing curtains and sweeping city views, the space felt worlds away from the busy pace of everyday life. The atmosphere was so calming that the class felt as restorative as it was challenging, creating the kind of experience that has you checking the timetable before you’ve even left the room.

But the real magic happens once the workout is over.

The recovery facilities are enough to make even the most committed gym avoider reconsider their relationship with exercise. A dedicated Restoration Zone features saunas, hot and cold plunge pools and advanced recovery technology designed to help members recharge after training or simply unwind after a busy day.

Our very own Ellen having a zen moment in the magnesium spa.

Then there’s the Recovery Cave, private recovery suites, red light therapy and massage services, all woven into an experience that puts recovery on equal footing with movement.

For Ellen, the magnesium spa was the perfect way to finish not only her workout but her entire week. Sinking into the warm water after moving through the different wellness spaces felt like a reward in itself, and the kind of ritual that could easily become part of a regular Friday routine.

It’s part of a broader shift happening in the wellness world. More people are looking for spaces that support how they live, work and feel, rather than somewhere they simply exercise for an hour.

Speaking of coffee, visitors won’t have to wait long for another reason to stay awhile. Sureyya Kahve, a wellness-focused café from the team behind KAILO Wellness Medispa, is set to open soon, adding another layer to the all-day lifestyle experience.

Sleek facilities and modern machines blend with cosy wellness spaces.

The result is a venue that feels perfectly suited to West End itself. It’s vibrant, community-focused and designed around the idea that wellbeing isn’t confined to a single workout.

Whether you’re chasing a new fitness challenge, looking to level up your recovery routine or simply curious about Brisbane’s most talked-about wellness opening, Function Well West End is worth a visit.

Just don’t be surprised if your quick gym session turns into a much longer stay.
