We’ve got our calendars marked and our superhero capes ready for this year’s Brisbane Supanova Comic Con and Gaming. From Friday November 8 until Sunday November 10, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) will be home to Brisbane’s largest gathering of pop culture fans, artists and celebrities and we couldn’t be more excited.
Fans of franchises spanning film, television, video games, comic books and everything in between are welcomed to this extravaganza of specialist stalls, artist alleys, cosplay, celebrity meet and greets, panels and live music (and that’s just inside the main hall).
Each year, Supanova hosts an array of celebrities with some very famous faces amongst this year’s lineup. A household name, John Travolta will be trading in the Hollywood red carpet for the Friday of Supanova. The famous actor, who is known for roles in films such as Pulp Fiction, Grease!, Face/Off and Saturday Night Fever, will be participating in a panel and dedicated fans can get a photograph posing with Travolta or an autograph to remember the day (count us in). Harry Potter fans will remember Jason Isaacs as the cunning Lucius Malfoy however the man of many roles will be extending his repertoire to include featuring at Supanova as a Supa guest. Daredevil and True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll will also be joining the line-up of guests so she can meet her excited Australian fans (we sure are!).
The other celebrities fans can have the chance to see are Billy Zane, Mark Sheppard, Alison Sudol, Amy Acker, Julie Benz, Gregg Sulkin, Sean Patrick Flanery, Paul Amos, Elizabeth Blackmore, Adam Tuominen, Cliff Simon, John Jarratt, Mark Strickson, Linda Ballantyne, Katie Griffin, Jen Brown, Matt Shipman and Brittany Lauda. With a line-up as great as that you’ll be looking at buying the full weekend pass to balance the panels of your favourite celebs with the other fun Supanova has planned.
Ever wanted to see your favourite Star Wars tunes live but performed by a rock band? You’re in luck at Brisbane Supanova thanks to the international Star Wars themed band, Galactic Empire (rock on).
Film buffs can learn about the behind the scenes of the new film Almythea: Rise of the Wingtar and meet the incredible cast and crew that brought the film to life.
Supanova is also home to cosplay, also known as costume play, where fans can dress up as their favourite characters and celebrate, with other fans, their franchise’s magic. Cosplay is renowned internationally so Supanova is lucky enough to be hosting international ambassador, Maegan Marie, and Australian cosplay ambassadors, Breathless-ness and Georgia costumes.
For those with a knack for making, Supanova’s national level cosplay competition, The Odyssey will also be held on the weekend. Cosplayers who enter will go into the running to receive prizes worth over $15,000 including a trip to the USA for Dragon Con 2020 (time to get that old sewing machine out and get crafting).
For those with spare spaces on their walls that need filling, The Alley is the place for you! Digital and comic book artists, as well as authors, will bring to life this hub of creativity at Supanova. Fans of Eric Powell’s 1999 dark comedy comic, The Goon will be able to meet the creator before the comic becomes an animated feature film with director David Fincher at the helm. The authors that fans can meet include fan favourites: Anne Bishop, Juliet Marillier, Lynette Noni, Maria Lewis, Jodi McAlister, Will Kostakis, A. J. Cootes, Marc Lindsay, James Lindsay, and Kim Wilkins.
Tickets are available online per day at $32.50 for the Friday or $37.50 for the Saturday and Sunday. Alternatively, if you’re looking at soaking up as much of the event as possible, the Supa-Fan Weekend pass is $82.50, and you’ll get access to the spectacular weekend in Brisbane (sign us up!).
If you’re looking for a place to celebrate Star Wars and Marvel this is the right event for you. And if you feel like you’re the only fan in Brisbane celebrating a niche show, film, game or comic, Supanova Brisbane will prove quite the opposite.
