Patrick Bateman has excellent skin, an expensive apartment, an alarming collection of business cards and a wardrobe that probably costs more than my car.
He also has a bit of a murder problem.
Now the famously unhinged investment banker is coming to Brisbane in American Psycho – The Musical, and if you’ve ever watched the film and thought, “This is horrifying, but imagine if everyone suddenly started singing,” your very specific moment has arrived.
The musical will arrive at Brisbane Powerhouse from 4 February 2027, following a sell-out 2025 season in Melbourne. It brings the world of Bret Easton Ellis’ notorious novel to the stage, with the story set in 1980s Manhattan, where investment bankers wear impeccable suits, spend their evenings competing over restaurant reservations and business card stock.
At the centre of it all is Patrick Bateman: wealthy, successful, very handsome and increasingly alarming. By day, he is a Wall Street investment banker with a taste for designer tailoring and a deeply committed skincare routine. By night, things become considerably more difficult to explain at a dinner party.
The stage musical features music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik, the Tony Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer behind Spring Awakening, with a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also behind Riverdale. Alongside the original score, the show features songs from some very recognisable 1980s artists, including Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order and Huey Lewis and the News.
So, yes, there will be blood. There will also be music.
Conor Beaumont will return to the role of Patrick Bateman after his performance in the 2025 production, joined by a cast of Australian musical theatre talent including Mia Dabkowski-Chandler as Evelyn Williams, Montana Sharp as Jean, Harley Dasey as Paul Owen, Jake Ameduri as Tim Price, Meg Williams as Courtney Lawrence and Aaron Robuck as Luis Carruthers.
The production is directed by Mark Taylor, who also directed the 2025 premiere.
Mark says the production feels particularly relevant through a 2026 lens, with Bateman’s idolisation of Donald Trump forming part of the show’s examination of power, wealth and status.
It is a very 1980s story that has somehow found itself with plenty to talk about in 2026.
So, if your idea of a fun night at the theatre involves a famously disturbed investment banker, designer suits, 1980s pop music and a story about what happens when wealth and status become a person’s entire personality, you may want to keep an eye on this one.
