Playing at the Lyric Theatre QPAC until 18 October, Anastasia the Musical is a lavish, heartfelt production presented by Opera Australia and Crossroads Live Australia. It’s a show that dazzles visually, moves emotionally, and—most memorably—soars vocally from start to finish.
Georgina Hopson leads the cast with a truly breathtaking performance as Anya. A proud Toowoomba local and Queensland Conservatorium graduate, Hopson’s vocals are nothing short of glorious—clear, powerful, and emotionally resonant, as her voice glides effortlessly through the score. Her portrayal alone is worth the price of admission, and Queensland audiences will feel a genuine sense of pride watching her shine on home soil.
Robert Tripolino’s Dmitry is another vocal delight. His charming characterisation is matched by a smooth, confident vocal delivery that feels wonderfully natural.
Joshua Robson as Gleb has a commanding vocal presence—rich, resonant, and intensely expressive. His portrayal of a conflicted villain is gripping, though his sheer intensity may feel a little overwhelming for young children in an otherwise family-friendly musical. Still, his performance is undeniably impressive.
Rodney Dobson’s Vlad is lovable, funny and warmly endearing. His scenes are a joy, and you can’t help but wish the script offered more opportunities for his character to shine.
The production is further elevated by musical theatre royalty: Rhonda Burchmore as Countess Lily and Nancye Hayes AM as the Dowager Empress. Watching these seasoned performers work is a genuine pleasure; they bring elegance, wit, and gravitas to every moment.
The ensemble deserves high praise for their versatility and exceptional vocal cohesion. They shift between countless characters with seamless precision, and their ensemble singing is consistently wonderful. It’s a testament to both their talent and the musical direction of David Spicer.
A special mention for Sopia Bae’s flawless Swan Lake ballet in Act II—an unexpected and enchanting moment that adds to the show’s visual splendour.
Visually, the production is a marvel. The set structure, combined with exceptional digital and lighting design, transforms the stage again and again, keeping the story fluid through its many scene changes. The shift from Russia in Act I to Paris in Act II is striking—you might almost feel you’ve stepped into a different show—but this contrast is intrinsic to the writing and handled as seamlessly as possible.
For lovers of beautiful singing, lush design, and world-class performance, Anastasia is a must-see. And for Queenslanders, seeing Georgina Hopson soar in the role of Anya is a joy you won’t want to miss.
Warm, visually stunning, and performed with heart—this production is highly recommended for audiences of all ages.
