Kids have an incredible ability to decide something is magical without needing much evidence. A few red lights become the inside of a dragon. Green laser dots are obviously fairies. A hologram hidden among the trees isn’t clever technology—it’s simply an animal that’s wandered out to say hello.
Taking my four and nine-year-old nephews to Beyond: Every Path Leads Elsewhere at Sirromet Winery reminded me that maybe adults are the ones overthinking things.
I’ll admit, the only reason I’ll willingly wander through a forest after dark is if someone promises me glowing lights, magical creatures and a very good story waiting around every corner. Beyond delivered exactly that.
Within minutes, we’d reached a tunnel glowing entirely red. “It’s a dragon!” my youngest nephew announced with complete confidence. Naturally, we weren’t simply walking through a tunnel anymore. We were stepping into the dragon’s mouth before making our way through its enormous glowing belly, complete with dramatic sound effects supplied by two very enthusiastic little boys.
The funny thing was, the boys barely noticed they were looking at light installations. As far as they were concerned, every corner of the trail was another chapter in the story they’d already started telling themselves.
The first “fairies” appeared as hundreds of tiny green and purple laser dots dancing across the trees and ground. Both boys spent the next few minutes darting around the bush trying to catch them before they disappeared. They never quite managed it, but that didn’t stop them trying.
A little further on, flowers bloomed beneath our feet. Every step triggered another burst of colour, transforming the pathway into a living garden that seemed to spring to life wherever we walked. It was impossible not to slow down just to see what would happen next.
The surprises kept coming. Holographic animals appeared unexpectedly among the trees, blending so seamlessly into the bush that each one felt like a genuine discovery. Towering illuminated archways drew us deeper into the trail, intricate lanterns glowed overhead and bursts of light resembling electrical fireworks stretched high into the canopy. Every bend revealed something completely different, so the boys charged ahead eager to see what was waiting around the next corner.
The trail takes around an hour, depending on how often you stop for photos or, in our case, pause to investigate dragons and chase fairies. It’s an easy walk along established paths, making it a lovely outing for families with young children, older kids and grandparents alike.
One piece of advice: rug up. It was much colder than I expected once the sun disappeared, and the bush setting makes the temperature drop feel even sharper. A warm coat, enclosed shoes and maybe even a beanie won’t go astray if you’re visiting on a chilly evening.
When we visited, there was a small kiosk selling hot drinks and snacks, plus one savoury food truck and one dessert truck if you wanted something more substantial before or after the trail.
Somewhere between chasing fairy lights, wandering through a dragon’s belly and watching flowers bloom beneath our feet, I realised I’d stopped looking for the next light installation too.
I was looking for the next adventure.
