Beenleigh’s favourite little theatre with a mighty big heart is back — and this time, they’re bringing a literary classic to life in the most heartwarming way.

Phoenix Ensemble is rolling out the red carpet for their second mainstage production of 2025: Little Women the Musical, opening May 2nd and running through May 24th. Get ready to fall in love all over again with Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March — and maybe shed a few happy tears along the way.

If you grew up with Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel sitting on your bedside table, you’ll already know why this story continues to resonate across generations. And if you’re somehow new to Little Women, prepare yourself: this is a story of fierce ambition, deep loyalty, gut-wrenching loss, and sisterhood that refuses to break — all wrapped up with beautiful music, heartfelt performances, and that unmistakable old-school charm.

This musical adaptation features a stunning score by Jason Howland, book by Allan Knee, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. It first hit Broadway back in 2005 and shot Sutton Foster to stardom in the role of Jo March — so yes, the bar is set high, but knowing Phoenix Ensemble’s reputation, they’re absolutely ready for the challenge.

A story about finding your voice
Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters as they come of age during the American Civil War. Jo, the fiery and ambitious writer of the family, is determined to make a name for herself in a world that doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for women with big dreams. After a string of rejections, Jo is encouraged by her friend, Professor Bhaer, to dig deeper and tell the real story — her story.

It’s a heartfelt journey filled with love, loss, hope, and the kind of family bonds that hold strong even when everything else falls apart.

Bringing fresh energy to a classic
Director Tammy Sarah Linde is bringing a modern spark to this period piece, balancing authenticity with contemporary relevance.

“Sisterhood isn’t just about shared blood,” Tammy explains. “It’s about loyalty, love, and choosing your people — something that feels more relevant today than ever. We’re staying true to the original period, but leaning into the timeless human connections that audiences still relate to now.”

It’s been a few years since Brisbane audiences have seen a production of Little Women on stage, so this revival feels particularly special — and judging by the passion and energy buzzing from the cast and creative team, it’s going to be one to remember.

Local talent, big production values
The Phoenix Ensemble team is pulling out all the stops for this one.

There’s a 10-strong cast featuring some of South-East Queensland’s most exciting local talent, backed by a powerhouse backstage crew of 16 and an impressive 14-piece live orchestra (no small feat when you’re working inside the famously intimate Tin Shed on the Beenleigh Showgrounds).

Phoenix has always been about creating magic in small spaces — and there’s something about being so close to the performers that makes every emotion hit a little harder.

Their commitment to community, high-quality performance, and creating spaces for everyone to belong shines through in every production — and Little Women looks set to continue that proud tradition beautifully.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the March sisters or discovering them for the first time, this show promises all the warmth, hope, heartbreak, and joy that have kept Little Women a beloved favourite for over 150 years.
