Neil Diamond’s biggest hits are making their way to QPAC, with A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical set to open at the Lyric Theatre on 20 March 2027 after a blockbuster Australian premiere in Melbourne.
Queensland audiences will get their first chance to see the Broadway hit, created in collaboration with Diamond himself, when the production arrives with a cast that includes four homegrown connections on stage and behind the scenes.
The musical follows Diamond’s journey from a kid growing up in Brooklyn to becoming one of the world’s biggest recording artists, with America, Forever in Blue Jeans and Sweet Caroline woven through the story that shaped one of music’s most extraordinary careers.
That career has produced more than 140 million album sales, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, inductions into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and sold-out concerts that made Diamond one of the biggest live draws of his era.
Australia has played a starring role in that story for almost 50 years. His iconic Hot August Night album spent 29 weeks at number one in 1973 and 1974, stayed on the charts for 65 weeks, and became one of the country’s defining records of the decade. Seven Australian tours followed, beginning with the Thank You Australia tour in 1976 before returning in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2015.
“Some of my most thrilling nights have been while sharing my music with audiences around the world,” Diamond says. “I hope Australian audiences enjoy the show as much as I have.”
Brisbane has plenty to celebrate before the curtain rises.
Brisbane-born Hannah Fredericksen returns home to play legendary songwriter Ellie Greenwich and Neil Diamond’s mother, Rose Diamond, marking her first professional performance in Queensland after appearing in the record-breaking Australian run of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Queensland Conservatorium graduate Etuate Lutui joins the company alongside Brisbane-born Jordan Malone and Maryborough’s Katrina Bickerton, while Brisbane’s Liam McIlwain takes on the role of Resident Director.
The Australian cast is led by Broadway star Will Swenson as the younger Neil Diamond, with Terence Crawford playing Neil later in life. They’re joined by Ashleigh Rubenach, Monica Sayers, Alana Tranter, Tim Wright, Paul Hanlon and Hannah Fredericksen, alongside a company of Australian musical theatre performers bringing Diamond’s world to life.
Behind the scenes, the creative team brings serious Broadway pedigree. Tony Award winner Michael Mayer directs, Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett handles choreography, and four-time Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten, whose credits include Bohemian Rhapsody and The Two Popes, wrote the book.
For Australian producer Paul Dainty, who spent decades working with Diamond as his Australian promoter, bringing the musical here feels deeply personal.
“Bringing A Beautiful Noise to Australia is extremely special for me,” he said. “The response from Melbourne audiences has been extraordinary, with standing ovations and sold-out performances night after night. I know Brisbane audiences will be moved by the joy, emotion and unforgettable songs that have made Neil a legend.”
Neil admits the musical took time to become something he could embrace.
“The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one,” he wrote in a letter about the production.
He says working closely with writer Anthony McCarten helped shape the story, with therapy sessions becoming the lens through which his life unfolds on stage. Looking back, he describes watching those moments play out as “therapeutic”.
