One Night Only starring Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts, Emma.) and Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, At Midnight, Top Gun: Maverick) follows Owen and Allie as they try to find love for the only night of the year that singles are allowed to get down and dirty.
Living in a world where only those who are married can have… well, marital relations, one night a year the Government allows its single citizens a night off from the mandate to do with what they will. Owen is planning to propose to his long time girlfriend (Maya Hawke) before she tells him that she wants to sleep with someone else and that he should too. Allie is living her (almost) best single life but is looking for something more. After crossing paths multiple times in the course of an evening, they team up to get each other what they’re looking for… but will that be each other?
This movie was unexpectedly good. I really thought I’d be walking into another cringe rom-com and as a lover of rom-coms from Hallmark to Blockbuster, that is saying something. One Night Only is crass and crude without being over the top. It’s endearing, funny and incredibly well acted. Turner and Barbaro are an excellent combination; putting the storytelling to work with their skill and expertise. With cameos throughout from the likes of Molly Ringwald, Michelle Hurd, Julia Fox, Charlie Gillespie, this movie is exactly what I want all rom-coms to be and it’s so refreshing. It’s also nice to see a plot that isn’t too complicated, reflects the ridiculousness of a world we seem to be inching towards and a film that hasn’t cast names necessarily, but excellent actors!
One Night Only opens in cinemas across Australia on Thursday 13 August and is perfect for anything from date night to your next girls night out!
