Brisbane laneways continue to up their game, with Fortitude Valley’s California Lane the latest it destination to welcome a new restaurant: Viva La Cali.
The relaxed oasis situated at the end of the lane features a dual-level eatery that runs on relaxed SoCal vibes and margaritas. The 80sqm site has been transformed into a palm-tree-festooned paradise with an endless summer feel and moreish eats.
The menu boasts West Coast cuisine fused with Central and South American flair. Feast on tacos with scrumptious fillings such as crispy chicken, pickled veg, pate and ranchero; pork belly with fermented cabbage, apple and smoked yoghurt; or my personal fave beef carnitas, pineapple habanero salsa and smoked cream. There’s more but we don’t have room in this column to list all the mouth-watering flavours.
Beyond the tacos, there’s a selection of tasty bites to nosh to enjoy, from empanadas to guac, pico de gallo and chips, queso corn and even beef tartare.
As well as the nibbly share foods, there are also decadent mains on offer. Think King River wagyu with cactus salsa, roja cruda and Urban Valley coral. Or even Sir Thomas short rib with smoked pineapple, tomatillo, saltbush and parsnip. And vegetarians, perk up your tastebuds: you can feast on selections such as spiced eggplant with cacio mole, toasted pepitas and queso, or stuffed poblanos and roasted tomato with spiced rice and cilantro.
Then buckle up for a delicious cocktail list featuring twists on old faves including Spice Pear Margarita, Watermelon Margy High and our personal fave Rose Jose.
The venue features both open air and undercover space and is festooned with, well, festoon lights and a stunning sunset mural by local artist Steen Jones. All of it melds together to transport both you and your tastebuds to California with a tasty latin twist.
