Thursday night saw the reopening of Brisbane’s Lefty’s Music Hall, following its closure last November. The space, replete with a vintage saloon-bar and honky-tonk feel, transports you to another time and place; its old-world charm reminiscent of 19th century America.

Ornate chandeliers hang from the ceilings, while taxidermy statues line the walls. The decor is a mixture of wood, iron and leather, and for a moment you could expect to see horses parked out front.

Patrons fill the length of the main bar, the majority requesting Lefty’s signature Whisky Apples (Jack Daniels and freshly juiced apples), with others opting for Champagne or Brooklyn Lager; Pabst Blue Ribbon and Red Stripe beers flowing from the tap.

But this venue is more than a bar; as its name states, it is the home of live music. Kicking things off were the Honey Sliders, fronted by Danny Widdicombe on guitar and vocals, with Dan Mansfield (keys/vocals), Chris Bosley (bass) and Ben Carstens (drums/vocals). Belting out country, rock and soul hits, the band crafted stunning, laid-back vibes that instantly warmed the crowd.

With their set over, a selection of classic soul and blues numbers blasted the speakers, as the bar was once again filled with orders for Whisky Apples, as more trays of delicious Americana bites (think sliders, wings) moved around the floor.

Soon after the stage was reset and West Texas Crude, fronted by Andy Dashwood on guitar, began their
set with Elvis’ Little Sister. By their third number, a Rockabilly version of Green Day’s Time Of Your Life, people were on the dancefloor, raising the atmosphere to new heights. Joining Andy on stage was Doe Prijono on double bass, Darren Podlich on drums and Dave Hoffman on saxophone.

The night contained no fanfare or grand announcement to celebrate the re-opening, but as a first-time visitor, I have to say, a night at Lefty’s Music Hall is an experience; a chance to hear awesome music and sample great food and drinks. The heritage-listed venue remains full of character and holds all the original charm of is previous incarnation.
