My no-makeup makeup routine has one fairly specific job: make my skin look better without making it look like I’ve spent ages making my skin look better. I want my complexion more even, a little brighter and nicely hydrated, while freckles, pores and the general evidence of being a human being remain visible.

This is where MECCA Cosmetica’s Weekend Skin Hydra Tint has found its place. I’ve been testing it for a few weeks, mostly on workdays and ordinary mornings when I want to look presentable without committing to a full face. It’s a lightweight hydrating tint with SPF50, buildable coverage and a dewy finish, with peptides and vitamin C in the formula.

I’ve reached a point in my makeup life where I can identify the exact moment a complexion product has become too much. It’s usually around the time I’m standing in the bathroom in my glasses, staring at myself from six centimetres away and deciding whether I can justify another layer of something. Weekend Skin Hydra Tint sits comfortably before that point. One layer gives me enough coverage to even out my complexion while leaving my actual skin visible, which is the entire point of no-makeup makeup.

The texture makes it particularly easy. It’s a thin, fluid formula that spreads easilyt, so application takes about as much concentration as applying moisturiser while thinking about what I’m going to have for lunch. I used my new MECCA Cosmetica makeup brush to apply but it really does spread equally as well with your fingers (I just don’t like to get my hands all messy). You do need to shake it thoroughly before every application. I have learnt this through experience, because apparently even beauty editors can be humbled by basic bottle instructions.

The coverage is light, with enough buildability to deal with the areas that need a little extra help. I’ve taken to applying a layer across my face, then add more around my nose and cheeks where redness tends to make itself known. Freckles still show through, and I can still see skin texture. This matters to me because I want people to register my actual face before they register my makeup.

Then there’s the finish, which is dewy in the way I WANT a skin tint to be dewy, not in the “Is she sweating or oily?” way. My skin looks hydrated and fresh rather than shiny, and there’s a soft luminosity that makes a difference when I’ve had a morning involving an alarm, a breakfast Coke Zero and some questionable time management. After several hours, the finish still looks comfortable rather than dry or overly powdered.

I’ve also found it very cooperative with the rest of my makeup. Concealer sits neatly over it, cream blush blends easily and I can leave most of my face alone. On days when I want a little more coverage, I add another layer rather than reaching for foundation.

The formula also brings peptides and vitamin C into the mix, for smoothing, plumping and brightening benefits, along with SPF50 broad-spectrum protection. OF COURSE I still use my regular sunscreen underneath; I’ve spent enough years being told about sun protection to know that a sheer layer of makeup is NOT the moment to become adventurous in the sun. It’s extra protection, not a substitute.

Weekend Skin Hydra Tint has become the product I reach for when I want my complexion to look fresh, even and hydrated while keeping the rest of my makeup extremely low-maintenance. It gives me enough coverage to feel polished, enough glow to make my skin look healthy and a finish that still resembles skin at the end of the day. For my particular version of no-makeup makeup, that is a VERY satisfying little piece of the puzzle.
