There are many benefits associated with using all natural skin care products, from improving the health of your skin to contributing to a more sustainable environment. Toxins found in regular skin care products are easily absorbed but are not easily rid of and parabens found in many products can alter the function of the endocrine system. This is why it is important to use all natural products in order to avoid these harmful ingredients.
Robin and David Lyons have long known the benefits of natural skin care and are the founders of Simplicité, a luxury natural skin care company. David, a Naturopath and Herbalist formulates Simplicité products with fresh plant extracts from medical grade herbs and plants that are certified organic or grown wild. David freshly handcrafts plant extracts – these active, herbal ingredients enrich the skin by improving microcirculation and reducing fine lines and are unique to Simplicité.
The Simplicité philosophy is to “give skin all the nutrients and vital antioxidants it needs and it will become the very best it can be”.
With consumers more invested in finding natural, sustainable and cruelty-free beauty products, Brisbane is fortunate to have the Simplicité store in Newstead where qualified therapists are on hand to give valuable advice and quality products are available to combat everything from blemishes to sun damage.
MyCityLife were lucky enough to get some great advice from Simplicité co-founder, Robin Lyons.
When is the right time to start using anti-ageing products?
The mid to late 20s is when it’s helpful for your skin to be adding extra nutrients. This is easily achieved by adding a nutrient mask and a serum (make sure this is a ‘true’ serum – made only with concentrated plant extracts. Most serums are diluted and weak so don’t benefit skin).
Why is being cruelty-free and vegan-friendly important to you and is it something your customer’s value?
We’ve been making, using and selling Simplicité products for the past 22+ years – we’d never dream of testing our products on animals or using any ingredients that have been tested on animals. ‘Accidentally vegan’ is probably the best description for our approach. We believe, and our results for skin support this, that only plant extracts contain nutrients in the form that the skin can most easily use. Animal products have to go through your digestive tract before they are of any use!
People are much more informed these days when it comes to the advantages of eating healthily but often still use products on their skin that are full of chemicals. How does skin react to natural products?
Not all natural products are created equal – only when you use the highest quality herbs, plants and flowers (medicinal grade) in skin care products is there enough active nutrients to make a difference in the skin. That’s the only way your skin will look can look ten years younger.
Living in the city and having a busy work and social schedule often means getting around in humid conditions with makeup on. What kind of skin care routine do you recommend for this kind of lifestyle?
Cleanse twice a day with a gentle effective cleanser. Gently exfoliate each night to clear pores. Use a nutritive mask a couple of times a week. Don’t use face products with too-thick ingredients such as shea butter, petrolatum, beeswax – they aren’t ‘rich’ but instead clogging and dehydrating.
What advice can you give when it comes to having a clear complexion and avoiding premature ageing?
It always comes back to the available nutrients in your skin care products. Avoid sun exposure on the face. Use active herbal extracts that revitalise and restructure the skin.
