Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas

From the archive: This post is from our original site – MyCityLife, on 9 February 2020

If you’ve left your Valentine’s Day planning a little late this year, pretend as though you haven’t and adopt one of the romantic itineraries below.

You can thank us later.

1. THEATRE: David Williamson’s Emerald City

Take it back to the ’80s with a sparkling revival of David Williamson’s Emerald City. The quirky comedy lends itself nicely to 2020; its relatable relationship story is as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. Starring Rhys Muldoon (House Husbands) and Marg Downey (Kath & Kim), Emerald City’s sharp, satirical take on marriage will serve as the perfect Valentine’s Day night out.

Tickets from $61, available here.

2. MOVIE: Call Me By Your Name

Go full-romance and revisit the moving adaptation of André Aciman’s 2007 novel, Call Me By Your Name. Palace James Street will be screening the heart-wrenching flick for one night only. Grab your loved one, the tissues and a peach cocktail from the snack bar (yes, really!). A Valentine’s Day featuring Timothée Chalamet? You can’t go wrong.

Tickets $10-$15, available here.

3. DRINKS: Valentine’s Day Cocktail Markets

What’s better than a wine tasting? A cocktail tasting. Welcome to Jade Buddha’s Valentine’s Day cocktail markets where, from 6pm, you’ll be able to toast to your love with a romance-themed tipple and sweet canapés. Entry to the riverside bar is free, but $35 will get you four cocktail tokens to use at the special pop-up bar.

4. FOOD: Miso Hungry, Miso Thirsty at Saké Restaurant & Bar

Dating a foodie? Why not throw back some saké and spicy ponzu oysters at a romantic dinner? Saké Restaurant & Bar will be serving a specially curated Valentine’s Day menu that features a tonne of fresh seafood and party-hearty Japanese treats.

Book a table, $119 per person, here.

5. CREATIVE: Brush ‘n’ Beers ‘Paint Your Mate’ Class

Recreate your own Rose and Jack portrait sitting (but with clothes) and spend the evening painting bae’s face. Brush ‘n’ Beers at Newstead Brewing Co. is hosting a ‘Paint Your Mate’ painting class this Valentines’ Day. Enjoy a complimentary schooner or house glass, and a special night with your Valentine.

Tickets from $48.24, available here.
